Ingrown Toenail Treatment in Taylors Lakes
Have your ingrown toenail treatment in Taylors Lakes at Taylors Lakes Podiatry Clinic before it’s too late! Ingrown toenails can be very painful and often lead to infection. While it usually occurs on the big toe, ingrown nails can happen to the smaller toes as well.
Ingrown toenails happen when the corner of the toenail grows into your skin. It’s usually caused by cutting the toenails by tapering (or rounding) their corners. While not serious, it is awfully painful. If you have diabetes or the nail seems to have an infection, it can pose a risk to your health. Have a podiatrist find out if you need an ingrown toenail treatment.
Other Causes of Ingrown Toenails
While the most common of causes is incorrect nail cutting by tapering or rounding the nails of your toes, other probable causes are trauma, wearing tight footwear, picking, poor foot hygiene, genetics and abnormal curvature of the nails.
Have the foot experts at Taylors Lakes Podiatry Clinic assess your condition for proper diagnosis. In the meantime, make sure that you keep the area clean by using saline or salty water and a proper antiseptic. Never try to treat it yourself as it often makes the condition worse.
Do You Have an Infected Ingrown Toenail?
When an ingrown toenail grows into the skin, or when the skin grows over the nail edge, bacteria can enter and may cause an infection. Here are some of the symptoms of an infected ingrown toenail:
o Liquid or pus seeping out from the toe
o Pain
o Reddening or darkening of the area
o Swelling
o The toe feels warm or hot to the touch

Surgical Treatment
If you have an ingrown toenail or if the condition persists, our podiatrists can conduct an ingrown toenail surgery known as nail avulsion. It can be a complete or partial nail avulsion, depending on the condition of the ingrown toenail.
During partial nail avulsion, a local anaesthetic will be administered to the area to remove the problematic nail edge. Once the anaesthesia is in effect, your toenail will be partially or fully cut away. It can take a few months for your toenail to grow back.
In cases where the condition keeps occurring, a complete nail avulsion may be prescribed. Just like in partial avulsion, a local anaesthetic will be administered to the area to remove the problematic nail. A chemical will then be used to burn the cells where the nail edge grows from, permanently removing the nail root.
