Surgical Treatment
If you have an ingrown toenail or if the condition persists, our podiatrists can conduct an ingrown toenail surgery known as nail avulsion. It can be a complete or partial nail avulsion, depending on the condition of the ingrown toenail.
During partial nail avulsion, a local anaesthetic will be administered to the area to remove the problematic nail edge. Once the anaesthesia is in effect, your toenail will be partially or fully cut away. It can take a few months for your toenail to grow back.
In cases where the condition keeps occurring, a complete nail avulsion may be prescribed. Just like in partial avulsion, a local anaesthetic will be administered to the area to remove the problematic nail. A chemical will then be used to burn the cells where the nail edge grows from, permanently removing the nail root.
